The Great Resignation are now experiencing a number of regrets. According to the survey conducted by Paychex, 8 out of 10 employees who resigned from their jobs reported experiencing some level of regret. Most of the regrets are Gen Z job-hoppers who left their positions.
The reasons for regret varied, with some employees citing lower pay, poor job fit, or a lack of opportunities for advancement in their new job. On the other hand, some employees reported feeling happier and more fulfilled in their new role.
The most common among respondents was missing the camaraderie and close relationships with their old colleagues 48%. This was followed by missing their previous job responsibilities and tasks 45%, followed by 43% wishing they could have negotiated a better severance package.
About one in three respondents have actually tried to get their old job back, but only about a quarter of them were successful. The survey found that those who missed the camaraderie and close relationships with their colleagues were more likely to try to return to their old job.
The decision to quit a job is a personal one and can depend on a variety of factors, including pay, benefits, work-life balance, job fit, and opportunities for growth and advancement. Whether someone regrets quitting their job can also depend on their job search process, the new job’s conditions, and their overall job satisfaction.

It’s worth noting that this information was based on a single survey conducted by Paychex. While many participants in the Great Resignation have regrets, not all of them do. Some respondents are still happy with their decision to leave their old job, and are satisfied with their new work environment, pay, and benefits. But for those who do have regrets, it highlights the importance of considering all factors before making a job change, including the potential impact on one’s mental health, work-life balance, and relationships with coworkers.
